Mentoring (whether personal, business, or organisational), is primarily about offering mentees the opportunity to step away from their day to day responsibilities and spend time with an empathetic and experienced mentor.
Mentoring is primarily about helping the mentee to make their own decisions, by offering food for thought about whatever is relevant.
The discipline does overlap with coaching and consulting, the distinction with coaching being that the mentee isn’t accountable to the mentor in respect of meeting objectives, targets or goals, which often forms part of coaching.
Also, the mentee does not generally get direct advice about a specific work related issue, in the way they do with a consultancy service.
